Check availability →We'll depart early from Cusco in our private minivan, ascending through the breathtaking Andean landscapes. Our first stop is Paucartambo, a charming colonial town where we'll take a short walk through its cobbled streets and admire its historic bridge. Continuing our ascent, we'll reach the Acjanaco Pass, the official entrance to Manu National Park. From this point, the scenery dramatically transforms as we leave behind the high Andean grasslands and enter the dwarf forest and then the lush cloud forest, an ecosystem teeming with life. During our walk in the cloud forest, we'll immerse ourselves in a magical environment of giant ferns, bromeliads, and wild orchids. With patience and silence, we'll have the incredible opportunity to observe the spectacular courtship ritual of the Andean Cock-of-the-Rock (Rupicola Peruviana), Peru's national bird. It's also possible to spot quetzals, toucans, woolly monkeys, and other species characteristic of the cloud forest. Late in the afternoon, we'll arrive at the cozy Bamboo Lodge, nestled in nature, where we'll spend the night and prepare for the Amazonian adventure that awaits us tomorrow.
After breakfast, we'll resume our journey in our private minivan towards the port of Atalaya, a key entry point to Manu's lowland rainforest. Along the way, we'll stop to visit a coca leaf plantation, learning about its cultivation process, ancestral use, and cultural significance in Amazonian communities. We'll also make a brief stop at a natural viewpoint offering a spectacular vista of the valley and the river we'll navigate later. From Atalaya, we'll embark on a motorized boat and navigate the Alto Madre de Dios River. During the journey, we'll likely observe a wide variety of riverside birds, such as herons, kingfishers, and jungle vultures, all while enjoying the vastness of the rainforest landscape. Mid-journey, we'll stop at Aguas Calientes, where you can relax in its natural hot springs, an ideal spot to unwind amidst nature. In the afternoon, we'll continue by boat until we reach the Papaya Lodge, situated deep within the lowland rainforest. From here, we'll embark on an approximately one-hour walk to a camouflaged hide, specifically designed for discreet wildlife observation. We'll have the extraordinary opportunity to witness animals like tapirs, deer, monkeys, and small rodents approach the clay lick to feed on the saline clay. We'll spend the night at this hide, taking turns to observe the fascinating nocturnal activity.
After an early breakfast at Papaya Lodge, we'll set out for an exploratory walk along the extensive trails surrounding the lodge. During the excursion, we may observe monkeys, peccaries, toucans, parrots, as well as giant trees and a wide variety of medicinal plants used by local communities. This trek will be done with a small day pack (light backpack with snacks and water). Our guide will provide insightful interpretations about the jungle's biodiversity and its complex ecological relationships. In the afternoon, we'll return to the lodge to rest or relax in the surroundings, enveloped by the vibrant nature of the Amazon. As night falls, we'll have the option to take a night walk to search for tarantulas, tree frogs, insects, and other nocturnal species that emerge after dark.
We'll wake up very early to begin our return journey. After preparing our luggage, we'll board the boat and enjoy breakfast on board as we navigate upstream on the Alto Madre de Dios River back to the port of Atalaya. Our private minivan will be waiting for us there to begin the return trip to Cusco, once again traversing the diverse ecological levels, from the tropical jungle back to the Andes.
